I had another terrible night. My mind is overthinking everything and I can't stop fretting. I'm literally making myself sick with worry. I woke up around 3:00 am and never could get back to sleep. I finally got out of bed at 4:25 am, came downstairs and worked on my laptop, paid bills, etc. I tried to take a nap on the couch but I couldn't get comfortable. 

I went back to bed and napped for an hour from 6:49 am to 7:54 am. And in the afternoon I took another 45 minute nap.

Today's Journal 

This morning I had to be at the Cancer Center for 9:30. My appointment was for 10:00, but it was actually 10:30 by the time I was taken to an examination room and handed a gown.

I had filled out the "Your Symptoms Matter" form online, so when the nurse came in she asked me about how I feel and about my anxiety and stress levels. So I explained to her what's going on with Dennis and said that was the reason my anxiety levels were so high. 

I told her we were waiting to hear from the oncology department for Dennis. The nurse said that my medical oncologist, Dr Vandermeer, does lung cancer treatments and is one of the best. She said she was going to make a note on my chart and at the desk to look for Dennis's name under "incoming patients". She said they don't have it yet but she will keep an eye out for it and she will request that Dennis get Dr Vandermeer. 

When the oncologist came in and spoke to me she also said she would keep an eye out for Dennis's name, and told me he would be having treatment in St Catharines, that he would not have to go to Juravinski in Hamilton. Apparently all lung surgeries are done in Hamilton, but because Dennis will likely be having chemo and radiation he would be having the treatments here. That was a huge relief to my ears. Having to go to another city for treatment adds an extra thick layer of anxiety. 

Anyway, my scans are all clear. She's happy with the mammogram, the physical exam and my blood work, etc. 

So we are still waiting but I feel we are one step closer to getting treatment for Dennis.

On the weekend I was entering medical expenses in the TurboTax program. We have 118 receipts for medical expenses for 2023. I had entered about 1/2 of them individually. Yesterday I had the program opened on my laptop when Windows did an update, and I lost all my entries for the income tax. I didn't even realize that the program had closed and had not automatically saved. I have been using this program for many many years and I've never lost everything before. 

The thought of entering all those medical expenses one at a time again literally makes me sick. I've heard some people just enter a lump sum. I don't know how you enter it as a grand total because they're all for different things. Some are for medical procedures, eyeglasses, dental, prescriptions, hospital parking, etc. I'm quite stressed about this. Typing is time consuming because I'm not good at it. I typically use talk to text and I can't use that when I'm entering the medical receipts.

I had a terrible night last night. I feel like I must have been awake the whole night long. I don't think I slept as much as my Fitbit shows I did. I focused on my breathing and trying to stay still, so it may have seemed to the watch that I was at rest, but I know how much thinking was going on in my brain and how often I looked at the clock. I'm exhausted.

Dennis had his appointment at the hospital this afternoon. We saw the surgeon that did the EBUS procedure & biopsies. He only spent two and a half minutes with us (I timed it). The doctor was ready to wrap up the appointment after one minute, but I had a couple of questions. 

He said the results of the procedure and biopsies showed that the cancer has returned and has spread to the lymph nodes. They biopsied three different lymph nodes and they all had cancer. 

So now we have to wait for an appointment with a medical oncologist to discuss chemo treatments, and the radiation oncologist to discuss radiation treatments. 

I asked when we might hear from them and he just shrugged his shoulders and said, "I don't know." Not a word of warmth or compassion or condolence. 

It seemed like he had no time for us because it was no longer his problem. I felt like throwing up after he left. 

Dennis is being fairly stoic and saying he's not surprised that the cancer has returned. He admits that not only did he smoke cigarettes when he was younger but all the jobs he had in the various factories as a Millwright meant he dealt with a lot of crap in the air. Aluminum dust, etc. Knowing potential causes does not make it any easier to accept. 

So now we have more waiting to do. We have no idea what kind of chemo he will be getting or how toxic it will be. We are hoping it is not going to make him too sick or cause him to lose more weight. He doesn't have any fat to lose.

Cancer is like a teeter-totter. You gotta go down before you can get back up. We'll try to be strong on the down days, and pray there will be an upside at the end of all the treatments. Thank you for your support. Our life has had a whole lot of ups and downs over the last 7 years. We must have broken a mirror back in 2017. 🙏

I'm reminded of Shakespeare's famous phrase, "Beware the Ides of March". That was the date that Julius Caesar was betrayed by his friends and murdered, so it's supposed to be bad luck.

This coming Monday we get the results of Dennis EBUS/biopsy. I'm terrified because the surgeon said he suspected that the lung cancer had returned and spread to his lymph nodes. Dennis is not doing well. He's been coughing for a year and a half, but the cough is getting worse instead of better. He's still coughing up blood, and he's lost nearly forty pounds. I read an article that said you can celebrate the Ides of March and get rid of any bad luck says if you do these three things. 

1. Drink a glass of wine to honour Julius Caesar. The ancient Romans loved wine and drank it with most of their meals throughout the day. Pour a glass of wine and make a toast to Caesar and his life. If you don’t like wine, you can make a “Bloody Caesar” cocktail, which is a Bloody Mary, with hot sauce and Caesar spices.

2. Watch a movie or documentary to learn more about Julius Caesar’s life. There are plenty of movies about the life of Julius Caesar, and many of them are available online for free. Search Caesar’s name on a streaming service or YouTube, and spend a few hours immersed in Roman life in the time of Caesar! There are plenty of documentaries about Caesar’s life, and some cable channels do Caesar marathons on the Ides of March.

3. Make a Caesar salad. Combine romaine lettuce, croutons, and parmesan cheese in a bowl, and toss them with a pair of tongs. Then, drizzle Caesar dressing across the top to finish the salad. You can even add some chicken to the salad for extra protein to keep you full throughout the day.

I don't want to take any chances, so that's what we'll be doing today. I bought romaine, an Et Tu Caesar Salad kit, and a rotisserie chicken for tonight's dinner. I haven't had any wine since January, but I might buy a bottle. And I've picked something to watch on Amazon Prime. (It's also on YouTube).

In the morning I took Tickles for s nice walk at the cemetery. Then, in the afternoon, Dennis and I took a drive over to Heartland Forest in Niagara Falls to buy solar eclipse glasses. They're doing a fundraiser and the glasses are $3.00/pair.

I think Dennis had a rough night. He coughed frequently. I wake up every time he is coughing and I can't help but feel really sorry for him. He's been coughing, every single day, and night, for 1 1/2 years. We still have more than a week until we get the results of the biopsy.

Prayer: Lord, I ask for your protection over my husband in all areas of his life - physically, mentally, and spiritually. I pray for good health and the desire to take care of the temple (body) you have given him. Renew and protect his mind to not dwell on negative thoughts or things that are not of you. I pray against the schemes and attacks from Satan that are not seen. Thank you for your faithfulness in his life, and I ask that you remind him of those times so that he will remember that you are always with him. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Today I purchased an online video course called Nervous System Release from Movement World. It's produced by a couple of physiotherapists from Finland. The course contains a number of physiotherapy videos for exercises to do at home.

We plan on leaving the house today at 12:15 pm. We need to be at St. Joseph's Hospital in Hamilton to register by 1:45 pm. Dennis will have his EBUS procedure at 2:45 pm under general anesthesia and then go to recovery. I'm guessing we'll be able to leave between 4:30 - 5:00 pm, and should be home shortly after 6:00 pm.
