I've had back pain off and on for the last few years, but lately the episodes are becoming more frequent and lasting longer. I've been previously diagnosed with Degenerative Disk Disease and Piriformis Syndrome, plus my back was injured in a car accident in 2017. The aging process is the mostly likely reason for the continued deterioration of my spine, the compression of my discs, and the pinched nerves.

Mindfulness is simply being fully present in the moment, and aware of what you’re doing and where you are. It’s the act of paying close attention to your thoughts, feelings and sensations as they’re happening. It’s taking note of your surroundings. Mindfulness is a simple, effective way to reduce stress because it stops you from reacting to or feeling overwhelmed by distractions and pressure.

Using mindfulness exercises has been proven to help distance you from concerns that don’t necessarily affect you right now, yet are causing stress.

For example, if you have a looming deadline you’re worried about, you may notice after a session of practicing mindfulness that the deadline will happen in the future, yet it’s causing needless anxiety right now. Being present is an opportunity to recognize unnecessary stress. In fact, it may even help you to be more productive.

One of the best ways to become more grounded in the moment is to just pay attention to the sensations of your body and the environment around you. A good way to start is by focusing on your breath. Try this simple mindfulness practice:

* Start with some deep, simple breaths. This will naturally prepare you to relax by lowering your heart rate and blood pressure.
* Place your awareness on your breath, inhaling and exhaling normally through your nose.
* When thoughts arise, simply label them, “thinking” or “wandering” to yourself, and return your awareness to your breath. It’s natural for thoughts to arise, but the exercise here is to return to mindful breathing.

You can practice mindful breathing for as little as 30 seconds or up to 20 minutes. It’s entirely up to you and what fits your needs. 

When you finish being present for a few minutes, you can re-enter the world relaxed and prepared to approach your responsibilities with a fresh perspective.

I decided to sign up for a 1-year paid subscription to Team Body Project. I had a 20% discount and IF I actually do the workouts it will be worth the price. If I don't do them I'll have thrown my money away. However, I feel the need to get back into a fitness routine and attending live fitness classes at the Older Adult Centre isn't possible with all the medical appointments that I attend with Dennis.

8:00 am - I downloaded the Easy Quit Drinking app on Tuesday evening and had my last wine spritzer before 8:00 pm. The app gives you badges frequently at first. 1 Hour, 3 Hours, 6 Hours, 9 Hours, 12 Hours, 15 Hours, 20 Hours, 1 Day, 30 Hours, 36 Hours, 40 Hours, 2 Days, 60 Hours, 3 Days, etc.

Actually, for me quitting alcohol is not a problem. I don't get cravings and have always diluted my wine by about 75% with club soda and ginger ale, so I used the wine more as a flavouring than anything else, but I think it's fun to keep track of dry days with the app. 

I want to get back in the habit of drinking more plain water.

Pavs Posts and Fence Repair WAS going to come to repair our old wood fence. They were going to replace three posts and straighten the rest, with the aim of re-using all the wood fence sections. However, I cancelled because he kept bumping our appointment and he demanded cash under the table and wouldn't allow me to pay by e-transfer. He just sounded too sketchy.

11:00 am - Dennis promised to do a 20 minute mobility workout with me. He really needs to move his joints and try to maintain his strength. He did do it and said he enjoyed today's routine.

2:00 pm - Dennis has an appointment at the Walker Family Cancer Centre with a radiation oncologist who specializes in central nervous system and hematologic malignancies. We don't know why he's seeing this doctor. Dennis's cancer has spread  to his lymph nodes, so maybe that's why.

Hematologic cancers begin in the cells of the immune system or in blood-forming tissue, such as the bone marrow. Common types of hematologic cancer are lymphoma, myeloma, and leukemia.

Lymphomas start in the lymph system, the part of the immune system that fights infection. Because the lymph system is found throughout the body, lymphoma can begin almost anywhere. The two main types are Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.


We left the house at 1:15 pm in order to be able to register 30 minutes early. Dennis had his appointment with Dr. Eric Nguyen. We were surprised to find out that his last name is pronounced Win. It sure looks more complicated than that.

I used my mantra off and on all the way to the Cancer Center. I envisioned the oncologist saying, "There's nothing remarkable on the brain scan. We are just dotting i's and crossing t's." Not that I'm superstitious or anything, lol.

And, that's basically what the radiation oncologist said. He said they did notice something going on near the brain stem and it is different than what they have been seeing in the past on the brain scans however, they don't think it has anything to do with his cancer. There could be something going on with the blood vessels in that area, they're not sure. However they don't think it means that the cancer has spread to the brain.

They are ordering a CT scan on the brain to see if they can figure out what they're looking at.

The oncologist was really nice and said that he didn't think that there was anything to worry about at this time as far as the head is concerned. But if the cancer ever did go to the brain then he's the oncologist that would be dealing with it.

So we've dodged another bullet for now, and are grateful to be able to say, "Whew!"
