I have an appointment this afternoon at 2:15 pm with my hematologist oncologist to get the results of my latest bloodwork to see if my lymphoma is still in the indolent stage. I had to be there by 1:45 pm but I didn't actually see the doctor until nearly 4:00 pm. Thank goodness I had a book with me. My bloodwork is fine. They'll re-check my in 6 months.

We know what it is we need to do. We have the information. The problem is doing it. Marcus Aurelius says, "You could be good today, instead you choose tomorrow." We put it off. We say I'm going to get started on the diet, I'm going to get started on the novel, I'm going to get started a cleaning the house. I'm not going to do it today, I'm going to do it tomorrow. 

If it was about information no one would be overweight, no one would be unhealthy, everyone would have six pack abs, every project would get completed. We know how to do it, the problem is that we don't do it. We don't take the steps. 

That's why the stoics have, "the discipline of action". At the end of the day it's all about the action you take. It's not what you say, it's not what you think, it's what you do.  What action are you going to take? What step are you going to take? And really that's how you finish stuff. Step by step. "Just take the first step,"  Marcus Aurelius says, "No one can stop you from that."

9:50 am - appointment for bloodwork at LifeLabs. 

John and Lise are taking Lil out to lunch for her birthday. Dennis and I can't go. We haven't seen any of my family since September. That was the day her cat Bailey died and we went to her house to help. Dennis wrapped Bailey up in a blanket, put him in a cardboard box for transportation, and then we went out to John and Lise's house to bury him in the pet cemetery. 

Dennis has been coughing since last fall, and we've been told his cancer has retuned and has likely spread to his lymph nodes, but we are STILL WAITING to the EBUS/biopsy. It's horrendous waiting and not knowing what the hell is going on.

Happy Valentines Day. AND Happy 4th Birthday to our beautiful Miss Tickles. She's a recued "Potcake". Tickles and her three littermate brothers were abandoned feral pups on the island of New Providence in The Bahamas. They were rescued on April 3rd 2020, when they were about 7 weeks old, by an angel named Claire Cash and her volunteer organization in Nassau called Potcake Puppy Palace. The pups were very thin and very scared. But they were loved and cared for by the volunteers that worked at the shelter and nursed back to health. Due to restrictions caused by the pandemic in early 2020 the rescue organization was not allowed to airlift puppies out of the country so the pups stayed in an outdoor chain-link fenced kennel situation with dozens and dozens of other Potcake pups for the next four months. 

After countless hours of hard work, months of planning and fund-raising and coordinating with the Bahamas Humane Society and the Humane Society of Durham Region in Ontario, on August 1st 2020, 90 Potcake puppies were crated and put on a cargo plane. The pups went to four different Humane Societies in Ontario, Canada and all of them had volunteer foster homes within days. Tickles was fostered by two women who owned one of our local Pet Valu stores. She lived with them for nearly a month while they tried to find a forever home for her. That home ended up being ours. I was allowed to bring the puppy home for the weekend. Dennis had NO CLUE this was happening until I walked into the house with 6 month old Tickles. His immediate reaction was, "Ohhhh, she's cute!" I knew then we were doomed, hahaha. We adopted her and she has been living her best life every since.

I called the Niagara Lung Diagnostic Clinic at the Niagara Health hospital. I just want to make sure the Dennis hasn't fallen through the cracks again. He had his follow-up CT scan on January 4th. Then on January 22nd he had an appointment with the radiation oncologist who gave him the results of the CT scan. He was told then that they suspected the cancer had returned and possibly had spread to the lymph nodes in the middle of his chest. He said he would arrange for the EBUS procedure at St Joe's.

About a week later we got a phone call telling Dennis that he had an appointment with the surgeon at the hospital in St Catharines on February the 5th. We thought at that time we were going to be given the date of the EBUS biopsy. But basically the surgeon told us the same thing that the radiation oncologist had told us 2 weeks earlier. Then the surgeon said he would arrange for the EBUS procedure. And that was 10 days ago and we still haven't heard anything.

Now he has an appointment on February 22nd with the radiation oncologist again who is supposed to be giving him the results of the biopsy but he hasn't had the biopsy yet. Argh.

The nurse didn't have time to talk to me this morning but she said she will pull his file and give me a call later today.

Later... she called back and they still don't have an appointment from St. Joseph's for the EBUS procedure. We were told that as soon as Dr Hanna gets the appointment they will call us right away. So, just continue to wait.

This past week I have been educating myself on the ancient Philosophy of Stoicism, and the life and times of Marcus Aurelius. He was was a Roman emperor from 161 to 180 and a Stoic philosopher. He also spent a lot of time journaling which is something that I do every single morning. I've been reading some of his essays and the "12 books of the Meditations". I find his writings absolutely fascinating and think if people lived their lives following the principles of the Stoics the world would be a much better place. 

All I really knew about Stoicism was the dictionary definition, "a person who can endure pain or hardship without showing their feelings or complaining". In popular belief, a Stoic is a person who is insensitive and unemotional. Stiff upper-lip, etc. Not true. The Stoic's goal wasn’t to banish emotion but to minimize the number of negative emotions. Stoicism actually has some things in common with Buddhism. I've been interested in Siddhartha Gautama since the 1960's and have read a lot of his teachings. In my 72 year I can honestly say that I have been a student of life, for a lifetime. I'm curious by nature and love to learn. 

As in cognitive behavioural therapy, it's important to focus on the things in life you can control, and not allow the external world to dictate our emotions or happiness. Stoic tenets:
* Wisdom is to act rationally and see the world with objectivity.
* Justice is to treat others with fairness and kindness.
* Courage is to be brave in the face of adversity, to realize that fear does more harm than the thing we fear.
* Temperance is self-discipline, the ability to resist temptations and to choose virtue over vice.

     I was feeling "scanxious" last night and had trouble sleeping. Dennis had his appointment today and the doctor expressed his opinion that it looks like the cancer has returned and is spreading. He's going to arrange for a biopsy, in the next couple of weeks, then it will take a couple of weeks to get the results. He said next further surgery is out of the question, so treatment will consist of chemo and radiation. 

     “Scanxiety” is the distress and/or anxiety occurring before, during, and after cancer-related imaging/scans. It's an upsetting experience during and following cancer. The anticipation of medical tests can put worrisome thoughts into our minds and give us great amounts of anxiety and apprehension. It's important to understand that scanxiety is a normal response. Acknowledge that this is hard, and treat yourself with compassion. 

     A cancer diagnosis brings chaos and confusion, anxiety and stress. The treatment process is a long slog. From afar, someone battling cancer can seem impressively strong and capable, but the truth is, most of us are just trying hard to feel any normalcy we can. I always preferred it when people acknowledged the challenge I was facing, rather than being dismissive, like it's no big deal. It is a massive freaking deal. We have to go through brutal treatments, trust our oncologists, and hope for the best. Meanwhile, every day it's hurry up and wait!
