Today's Journal

8:30 am - I called the cancer center and spoke with the nurse and she's going to talk with the oncologist and the pharmacist and call us back. I just need to know what we're doing about the blood thinner. I didn't give Dennis any yesterday or this morning and he normally takes it every 12 hours.

9:00 am - Physiotherapist Hany came to the house and chatted for about 20 minutes.

11:30 am - Nurse Sharlene came to the house. She said she has some patients that have lung cancer that cough up blood every single day. It's very, very common with lung cancer. She thinks they may take him off the blood thinner for a few days and then put him back on it but she's not 100% sure. With Dennis it's a fine line and they have to toggle between the blood getting too thin causing seepage or the blood not getting thin enough causing clots.

Noon - We got a phone call from Cancer Center giving Dennis an outpatient appointment for Thursday. Of course the only appointment he has coming up this week out of the house was at the exact same time on Thursday at 10:45 a.m.

So it took some fiddling but I ended up getting him an appointment at 1:00 p.m. that day. However I asked about the blood thinner and she said, "oh I don't know anything about that. I'm just calling to give you the appointment time."

So I called the Cancer Center back and spoke to the same receptionist that I had spoken to earlier at 8:30 a.m. this morning. She put me in touch with Dennis's primary oncologists' nurse. When talking to her I felt a little bit like we were getting the runaround.

She said that the blood thinner was not originally prescribed by the oncology department and I should be talking to his thrombosis doctor. I told her Dennis does not have a thrombosis doctor. She asked who prescribed the blood thinner injections. I told her they started them when he spent 12 days in the hospital back in early July. Then she wanted to know who was following up on that. I said no one that I'm aware of. They just gave me a prescription for the injections and he was to take one every 12 hours, and one week ago when Dennis had an appointment at the Cancer Center the substitute oncologist that was filling in while Dennis's primary oncologist was on holiday renewed his prescription.

So I had to wait again for her to do some more checking around and call me back again. I guess when you go in the hospital you don't just have one specialist taking care of you. You might see a number of different doctors, not just an oncologist. And they want to stick with their own little area of expertise. Plus I never got to speak to one doctor at all the whole time Dennis was in the hospital.

When she called back she said not to give Dennis any blood thinner this week until he has his appointment on Thursday. They're going to see about getting him an appointment with a thrombosis doctor, but she has no idea when that will be.

About a month ago they wanted him to see a cardiologist and the appointment we got was for December the 4th. I have no idea how long it will take to see the thrombosis doctor.

So I don't really feel like we have a definitive answer other than you better not give him any blood thinner until you hear otherwise.
